The Lower Mississippi River Delta is a big, wild and remote place. If you ever have the opportunity to explore the region, you could have no better guide than John Ruskey, Founder/Owner of Quapaw Canoe Company. I was on assignment, accompanied by my good friend, then colleague, staff writer and award-winning journalist Dave Shively (dshively.com). We were producing a feature story for Canoe & Kayak magazine and experienced the river in a way that few people ever do. We spent a week camping along its banks and paddled more than a 100-mile stretch of the river in Ruskey’s 30-foot handcrafted canoe.
